This image of an African-American man and 2 women riding in an old horse drawn carriage invokes feelings and nostalgia for colonial America in the time of the settlers and the old west. It looks as if they are heading home from the farmer’s market or the Amish county fair. A proud brown horse pulls the wagon under a cloudless, hazy, blue sky, down a surprisingly modern paved road, providing the contrast of the way transportation has changed over the years. Perhaps this picture is new, or an antique as the thin, dark frame suggests, reminiscent of a slide, or a still from an old western movie, or like an old photograph taken by a vintage camera. The trees and fields in the background are mixed shades of green drifting low and asymmetrical across the horizon. The large blue sky is dominant in the image. The clothing of the people in the image looks to be old, possibly from the early 1900’s or before. The ladies dresses are pastels of pink and orange. Each wears a hat. One straw and one black with a flower or two. The man who drives the old, wooden wagon wears a dark, suit coat and a derby style or similar hat, popular at the turn of the 20th century.

It has an old-fashioned look to it which is achieved by a grainy texture and a scratchy, damaged looking overlay. The colours are slightly muted giving the photo a unique look.
My reaction to this image was positive as it is is a well thought out shot and the touch-ups work well to give it an old-fashioned look. I thought that this photo, although simple, has a sense of beauty and interest.
